What is Ceremonial Cacao: Origins and Narrative

Best Ceremonial Cacao Perth

We are here to embark on an expedition into the realm of ceremonial cacao. A journey that begins with revelations about its origins, and narrative.

Reverence Events Co-Founders Catherine and Willow Francis have been holding regular Cacao Ceremonies in Perth, Western Australia since 2010. They have a shared background of medical training, as well as a passion and dedication to the wisdom traditions and holistic health modalities. In other words, they combine science and spirit in all their events.

A Journey into Nature’s Heart

Ceremonial cacao originates from the Theobroma Cacao tree. This tree is native to the dense rain forests of Central and South America

The Theobroma Cacao tree as it is known today, was named by botonist Carl Von Linneu in 1753.

Theobroma is from the Greek “theo” meaning God or the Divine and “broma” meaning food. This term is often translated as “the food of the gods.” It is called this for good reason as we will continue to explore throughout this post.

The scientific genus name for cacao is Theobroma, which translates to “Food of the Gods”. The Maya, for example, believed cacao played a vital role in well-being, and they saw it as a bridge to our connection with the divine.

Cacao is the fruit that the tree yields. This fruit is also known as a cacao pod. The pods grow on the bows and larger branches of the tree. The flowers are so small, they need to be fertilised by midges!

Unraveling the Historical Threads of Ceremonial Cacao

Ceremonial cacao’s story starts with ancient civilizations. The Olmecs, thriving between 1500 – 400 BCE in Veracruz and Tabasco, Mexico, first consumed cacao for nutritional and ceremonial purposes.

They shared their insights with the Mayans and then the Aztecs, continuing a reverent legacy.

In cacao’s mythology, when tribes felt disconnected from themselves, each other, or nature, the gods were said to bestow them with the harmonising gifts of the cacao tree. Once they embraced cacao, their connection with the noble qualities of humanity was restored, and harmony returned.

This story hints at ceremonial cacao’s core purpose: linking humanity with its heart.

The Transformation Process

Cacao trees bear fruit twice a year. After harvesting, workers open the fruits, revealing the precious cacao beans inside.

Transformation of Cacao from harvesting to drying

These beans, or cacao seeds, undergo a careful fermentation and drying process. This step is crucial for turning them into edible cacao. It prepares them both for cooking and spiritual ceremonies.

The seeds are now fermented, dried and then ground into a fine paste, now known as cacao paste (or liquor).

Ceremonial Cacao Paste: An Ancient Essence Emerges

Though not legally defined, ceremonial cacao paste has features that set it apart from regular cacao paste or cacao powder.

Firstly, it originates from organic cultivation, demonstrating a genuine commitment to the environment, the farmers, and the communities they sustain.

Secondly, the preparation of this precious paste is carried out with intention and care, a conscious homage to the age-old tradition and reverence ascribed to it.

Lastly, ceremonial cacao is imbued with the pure intention and deep respect of those who serve it, creating a bridge between humanity, the divine, and the natural world.

When we say ‘ceremonial grade’ cacao, we mean it’s chosen with care and prepared with integrity. Every step in the intricate process is taken with attention to its energetic aspects.

Before you’re swept away by the allure of cacao, we offer a gentle reminder: whenever you encounter products boasting the label of “ceremonial cacao,” take a moment to delve into the story behind it.

Allow your intuition and common sense to guide you, for each offering carries a unique narrative that might resonate with you (or not) in unexpected ways.

More than a Culinary Marvel

Cacao is the source from which all chocolate is made. Cacao is not only a culinary marvel but also a pharmacological wonder. It seamlessly interacts with our brains and hearts. As a result, it opens a doorway into expanded states of consciousness.

Cacao also invites us to step into the present moment, to engage with, and appreciate, the richness of life around us.

Indigenous cultures treasured cacao not just for its taste but its profound role in rituals and celebrations. It’s a reminder that each cup of cacao carries with it a legacy of reverence, a thread that weaves together generations past and present.

As you delve into ceremonial cacao, think about its source. Each offering is accompanied by stories of dedicated farmers, sustainable communities, and passionate individuals upholding tradition. Therefore, when you choose ceremonial cacao, you’re not merely indulging in a treat; instead, you’re immersing yourself in a deep narrative of humanity that reaches far beyond the mere confines of your cup.

Bridging Humanity and Mindfulness Through Ceremonial Cacao

The word cacao is said to come from the Mayan words “Ka’kau” meaning “heart blood,” and “Chokola’j” meaning “to drink together.”

This connection comes from the belief that the Mayan gods bled onto the cacao pods, and cacao was considered one of the ingredients used to create humanity.

The essence of ritualistic cacao goes beyond the sum of its parts. It’s also about mindfulness, connection, and the exploration of the senses. When you sit down with a cup of ceremonial cacao, you’re embarking on a personal journey, guided by the intentions of those who have carefully shepherded it from the tree to your hand.
